Phlebotomy is the procedure of extracting blood from a living organism. This is the scientific definition of the practice and is considered an essential component in various doctoral procedures. Phlebotomy training is offered in Charlotte for those interested in mastering the procedure and joining the medical field. Extraction of blood from living organisms sounds straightforward, but the handling of patients is a part of the process. Here are a few universal tips that are taught during training to engage prospective phlebotomists.
Tip #1: The Importance of Touch
When patients visit the doctor’s office for blood extraction, they notice the phlebotomist searching for the veins. This search can be done in two methods, one is easier and the other more difficult. Training enables prospective students to understand what makes their and the patient’s lives easier. Touch is what makes everything run smoothly. Running your fingers across the surface of the skin is paramount to finding the veins and incision spot.
Visualizing the location of the vein can be problematic. If the patient is providing problems (e.g, a child in fear), this visualizing process can become near impossible to complete. Therefore, the touch method is encouraged in phlebotomy training. With the touch method, the chances of making a mistake are essentially nullified.
Tip #2: The ‘Watch’ Trick
This is a neat tip that has developed over the years. This tip relies on the patient having worn a watch on their wrist. What does the watch have to do with extracting blood from the patient? The answer is simple, the watch places pressure on the wrist based on how tight it is. This will lead to the veins near to it becoming enlarged and more visible.
This tip does not work on all patients as some do not wear watches. It should never be assumed a patient has worn a watch; this is where communication comes into play. Learning to communicate with the patient is repeatedly taught in phlebotomy training. Prospective students are taught the correct ‘trigger’ questions to put patients at ease. The comfort level of the patient can often determine the quality and efficiency of the extraction process. The end goal is to provide a ‘painless and stress-free’ procedure for the patient. Understanding the ways of the patient’s mind can go a long way in becoming a successful phlebotomist.
Tip #3: The Application of Pressure
As pointed out with the ‘watch’ tip, pressure can lead to visible veins. A phlebotomist is taught to apply manual pressure in order to develop such a bodily reaction. This pressure can be applied through various means and these are explained in detail during training sessions.
In the end, as the saying goes, ‘practice makes perfect’. Eventually, the experience of past ‘draws’ will ease the difficulty of future ones. Join in and commence phlebotomy training in Charlotte NC; drawing blood is one of the more satisfying jobs in the medical field. Patient interaction and being a part of surgical procedures is a riveting experience for all phlebotomists. Changing patient lives and becoming a part of the process of healing is invaluable.
