California is one of the two states in the US where phlebotomists require certification and licensure to practice and a Regional Occupational Program is a great way to acquire one. If you would like to work as a phlebotomist, CNA or other trade occupation in San Diego CA, you have to successfully complete an approved training program. This includes a minimum of 40 hours of classroom learning with additional practical training where you have to make at least 10 skin punctures and 50 venipuntures.
There are several accredited ROP training centers in San Diego. They include U.S. Colleges Universal Schools, Health Career Specialist, and Family Health Services, as well as several other community colleges and private vocational schools.
After undergoing your training in one of these institutions, you can take a proficiency test with any of the state-approved providers, including NHA, NCA, NCCT/MMCI, ASCP, AMT and ACA.
You can apply for the certification test online, or have it delivered to you by mail by the California Department of health. Once you complete the test, you can mail it back together with the required supporting documents, such as your copy of state-approved exam results, 2 passport-sized photos, certificate of training course completion, written log of your lab training from your medial director or training clinic and sealed official transcripts from your GED provider or high school.
You will receive your phlebotomy certification approximately ninety days after submitting your application. If you have had at least 1,040 hours or 6 months of on-job phlebotomy work experience in the last 5 years, you are eligible for shorter training programs.
Certification in San Diego or any other place in California is only valid for 2 years. You will have to apply for re-certification once this period expires. To get the recertification, you need to provide proof of having undertaken at least 6 hours of continuing education.
San Diego provides affordable training through the county’s Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Currently, there are two San Diego ROP centers where you can undergo phlebotomy training. These are: the Vista Adult School, located at Vista and Sweetwater Union High School District found in Chula Vista.
To enroll in any of these centers, you need to have taken a medical terminology course. The materials fee for these classes is very low, and this is meant to make the program affordable to any San Diego resident who is interested in working as a phlebotomist or CNA.
The coursework of the phlebotomy training program offered under the San Diego’s ROP includes classes in physiology, anatomy, introductory healthcare, in addition to phlebotomy course units. Students are also allowed to train on actual patients under the close supervision of senior or experienced phlebotomists. This gives them practical experience, which is vital in the medical field. After this training, students are required to undergo 40 hours of externship to earn certification. Some centers offer credits leading to award of certification as a medical lab assistant.
Enrolling for phlebotomy training in San Diego will provide you with an opportunity to get started in one of the most lucrative and fastest growing career fields in the country. There are also many chances of upward mobility, and you can easily rise up through the ranks to better paying positions, such as lab technologists or a departmental manager.
